Bruce Ta
Starting Pitcher | Retired or Inactive Players
Pitching Now he's the consumate ground-ball pitcher, which I love: ground balls never leave the stadium. Ta performs extremely well in the late innings, but unfortunately his endurance prevents him from getting there very often. His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. The Retired or Inactive Players hope he can work on his control a little bit. Every once and a while one slips away from him and either ends up at the backstop or in the right field bleachers. Sometimes I wish he'd just give up on throwing the changeup, it's like a BP ball! In his first taste of the majors, he has kept lefthanders in check but wasn't as effective against righties.
Defense & Hitting He has a fair pickoff move and isn't a particularly easy target for basestealers. Ta seems distracted after his delivery. He's sometimes out of position, fails to cover a base or doesn't back up throws. Ta is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Ta has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Retired or Inactive Players have been known to use Ta as a pinch-runner on occasion.
