In the first 226 games against the Calgary Remparts the Cold Lake organization won 151 times. Jovon Yakov won many of those games. On April 25th things may have changed, thanks to Charlie Jennings. The 6 foot 7 inches catcher of the Remparts had a 4 for 4 night. All of those hits were homer and Jennings had all five of the RBI of his team who won 5-2. Let’s recap Jennings night.
In the first inning, with a 0-2 count, Jennings crushed the ball to left field for a 432 foot homerun. I was tying my shoes and I wasn’t looking at the game recall Pat Leclaire who is hitting .330 with 6 homeruns and 17 RBI since the beginning of the season. Then, I heard a sound like a car accident. I look at the field and I saw Yakov looking at the ball crossing the fence.
In the fourth inning, Yakov pushed Jennings off the plate with a high fastball. At this moment, there was a silence in the stadium. It was like there were only Yakov and Jennings one on one said Kris Plank who is hitting .398 with 8 homeruns and 21 RBI in April. The following pitch was a hanging slider that Jennings almost missed. But the ball hit the foul post, just over the fence. Sturm the Cold Lake left fielder almost caught the ball but Jennings had his second homeruns of the game.
In the sixth inning, Jason Goff stole first with a drag bunt on the first base line. I had to get on bases to see what it was like to go against Charlie on that night said the Calgary right fielder that is having a splendid season with a .370 batting average, 6 homeruns and 21 RBI. Goff got to second base on routine grounder to third base by Marcel Orren. Then on the first pitch, Jennings hit a fastball to center field, 459 feet from home plate.
In the ninth inning with two outs, Jennings capped on his dreamed night with a 503 feet homerun to left field. Yakov said after the game I wasn’t fooling with him in the ninth. I would only throw him fastball. I was curious to see how far he could hit it.
It was the ninth time a CBL batter got 4 homeruns in one game, the first time since 2013. After the game, Jennings was showing great respect for the game and for Jovon Yakov. I feel lucky to do that against Jovon, it probably wasn’t his game. How could you do that to a 369 games winner. Maybe after all those years losing here our time will come I was lucky on that second homerun tonight.
